Movie Review : The Color Purple

The color purple was a movie released at 1985 adapted from a novel by Alice Walker with the same title. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg with the stars like Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, Oprah Winfrey and introducing Whoopi Goldberg as Celie. At that time, the movie was a big success. It grossed over $142 million worldwide.
The story of the movie mainly the same with the novel which was telling a story about a black African-American girl named Celie during 1900’s-1930. Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) whose abuse began when she was a child had to face a lot of problems in her life. She has already had 2 children by her father at the age of fourteen and had to marry to a local widower Albert Johnson (Danny Glover). She called Albert only as Mister because she never knew was the guy she had married. Albert also made the life of Celie very miserable. He always hits her when what he wanted couldn’t be done by Celie. One day, Celie’s sister Nettie came to live with them after Celie and Nettie’s father was trying to abuse Nettie. Celie was very happy to live with her sister, so did Albert. He found that it’s a lucky to have Nettie in the house because actually the girl he wanted to marry was Nettie, not Celie. Now he had Nettie in the house he was happy. One day, Albert was trying to abuse Nettie but Nettie refused. She attacked Albert and made Albert very angry. Albert thrown away Nettie from the house and separated the two sisters. Celie was very sad. She was afraid to live with Albert. She learned to get her Self Confidence after met two great women Shug Avery (Margaret Avery) and Sofia (Oprah Winfrey).
The movie was directed very beautifully. Spielberg delivered the love of two sisters to the audiences so that the audiences can feel the love. Even though the movie did not contain a lot about lesbianism (the novel has more lesbian contents), Spielberg successfully gave us the pictures about the great survival of Celie. Spielberg, who was known only as a summer hits directors at that time proofed that he can make a beautiful drama. 11 nominations at Academy Award including Best Picture, Best Actress for Goldberg and Best Supporting Actress for both Avery and Winfrey also had proven the greatness of the movie. They did not win any of the nominations but still the critics gave the film a positive. Some other critics gave the film some bad reviews. They were disappointed that Spielberg gave the audiences the pictures of black men were very abusing. They also thought that Spielberg was lack of experiences for a drama because he usually makes a summer action films such as Indiana Jones. But in fact, the 11 nominations have proven that they wrong.
